On leading Pride

An interview for Pride month while I chaired the network

The pace in the change for diversity and inclusion over the last year or two has been phenomenal.

This is Daniel Bell. He’s the Global Creative Lead and Pride@Worley chair. He took on the Pride@Worley role in September 2020 with a vision to drive representation of LGBTIQ+ people at Worley.

“It’s gone from chasing leaders around the office to sign the Pride@Worley pledge to people chasing me. They’re interested. They care. They want to know how we’re doing. And more importantly, they want to be part of creating positive changes for LGBTIQ+ people. They’re allies. We’ve come a long way in a short space of time.”

Bell started his career with our consulting business, Advisian, in 2012 after he graduated from university in Brisbane, Australia.

“My first role was as a graphic designer. It was a small marketing team, and I learned a lot. I stayed in Brisbane for five years until I moved to London to join Worley as a Senior Marketing Advisor, focusing on the brand.

“Next, I was promoted to Global Creative Lead and moved to Amsterdam. I manage, mentor and develop a team of creatives across the Worley Group. It’s a big deal for me, and I want other people to have the same opportunities without any bias.”

Driving change for Pride

Bell was the driving force behind the official Pride@Worley network, which was formed in 2018. “I have a lasting memory of the ‘non-official’ beginnings of Pride,” he says. “I was in the London office in the UK with six colleagues, and we had a rainbow cake. And that was it – the start of Pride. On reflection, this was a big moment. I wish we documented it more.”

Pride@Worley provides support for the LGBTIQ+ people who work for us, explains Bell. “If you don't know who to talk to, or need a safe, confidential group, then we’re here. And if you don't know where to start, reach out to me.”

Looking to the future, Bell has a view on how the industry can support LGBTIQ+ people.

“We need to continue growing our network groups, like Pride@Worley. It provides a community, raises awareness and offers support. It’s also important that we look to our future. We need to start early and showcase diversity through STEM initiatives in schools and universities, so people know whoever they are, they are welcome at Worley.”
